Is Silver’s Rally Over?

After touching a record peak near $117 per ounce in late January 2026, silver has experienced a dramatic and prolonged unwinding. Spot silver fell below $52 per ounce today, down nearly 3.5% on the day and off more than 53% from its all-time high. Driven by a hawkish Federal Reserve shift, surging Treasury yields, and weakening industrial demand, the white metal is undergoing a fundamental repricing.

The primary trigger for sharp downturn stems from the Federal Reserve’s monetary policy stance. Following the latest FOMC meeting, the Fed opted to hold interest rates steady at 3.75%–4.00%. However, two hawkish dissents—calling for an immediate 25-basis-point rate hike—surprised markets and signaled that tighter policy remains firmly on the table. Because silver produces no yield, elevated interest rates and 10-year US Treasury yields hovering around 5.0% significantly raise the opportunity cost of holding physical bullion, prompting institutional liquidations.

Robust economic data out of the US has strengthened the greenback while pushing safe-haven flows away from precious metals. Third-quarter US GDP growth came in at a resilient 3.4% annualized rate, while core PCE inflation accelerated to 3.6% year-on-year.

Higher growth and sticky inflation have reduced market expectations for near-term rate cuts, boosting the US Dollar Index. Because silver is denominated in dollars globally, a firmer greenback makes the commodity more expensive for international buyers, dampening physical demand.

Unlike gold, silver’s dual status as both a safe-haven asset and a key industrial commodity leaves it exposed to broader macroeconomic shifts. A softening in global industrial manufacturing and reduced solar component purchasing have weighed on the demand outlook. As factory orders pull back and industrial consumption slips, silver has lost a crucial fundamental pillar that previously supported its speculative run toward record heights.

From a market structure perspective, the break below critical support thresholds has accelerated systematic selling. With spot silver breaching key moving averages and breaking below the $53 handle, algorithmic traders and leveraged funds have unwound long positions to cover margin requirements. Analysts are currently closely monitoring the $50 to $52 support zone. A sustained break below this floor could open the door to further consolidation before long-term value investors re-enter the market.
